Visiting Santiago’s Cigar Industry in December: Tours, Closures and Lounges

December can be an excellent time to experience Santiago’s cigar culture, but visitors interested in working factories should arrive early in the month. Many manufacturers reduce production or close for their Christmas holidays after mid-December, making factory tours difficult or impossible until operations resume in January.

Is December a Good Time for a Cigar Trip?

Yes, especially during the first half of December. Santiago offers comfortable evenings, an active restaurant and cigar-lounge scene, and a festive local atmosphere. However, December is not the city’s formal cigar-festival season. The main Procigar Festival takes place in February, when participating manufacturers officially organize factory visits and industry events for registered guests.

Important: Many Factories Close After Mid-December

If visiting a working cigar factory is the main purpose of your trip, plan to arrive during the first half of December. Many factories reduce production or close for their annual Christmas holiday after mid-December. Some do not return to normal operations until January, and exact closing and reopening dates vary by manufacturer and year.

A factory building may still be accessible to management or a limited number of employees during this period, but visitors may see little or no active production. A visit without rollers, tobacco preparation, quality control and packaging operations does not provide the same experience as a tour on a normal working day.

• After mid-December: expect limited availability, reduced production or complete factory closures.

• Christmas and New Year: plan for lounges, cigar shopping, tastings and other Santiago experiences instead of production tours.

Factory Visits Require Advance Confirmation

Cigar factories are working production facilities, not conventional tourist attractions. Some receive visitors only through prior arrangements, while others do not offer public tours. Do not arrive without confirmation: factory security will normally require the visitor’s name and an approved appointment.

• Schedule factory visits on weekdays during normal production hours.

• Request the visit before booking a trip around one specific factory.

• Keep an alternative factory or activity available in case production schedules change.

What About Private Holiday Cigar Parties?

Manufacturers, distributors and local cigar groups may organize Christmas dinners, employee celebrations or private receptions. These are industry events, not tourist attractions with publicly available tickets.
